A controversy erupted on Monday after several opposition parties demanded that migrant workers should not be charged for the train tickets. While the Congress offered to pay for them, the BJP said the railway was already providing subsidized tickets bearing 85 percent of the travel costs.
The railways is yet to issue an official statement on the issue.

highlighted that central govt is paying 85% fare. Rahul Gandhi had tweeted “On one hand, Railways is charging ticket fares from the trapped laborers in other states, while the Ministry of Railways is giving Rs 151 crore to the PM Care Fund.

Activist Sakte Ghokale pointed out that the whole 85% migrant ticket fee by centre was a lie. Rail tickets in India are “subsidized” since the railway is a loss-making entity.

Meanwhile Pro-Government channel Times Now tweeted that Only Kerala, Rajasthan & Maharashtra made the migrants pay for the railway tickets citing some ‘unknown source’ without even verifying the claim.
OpIndia says Congress offered to pay when there’s nothing to pay.

The claim by Times now that only Maharashtra, Kerala and Rajasthan are charging migrants, and Opindias claim that rail ticket was free was found to be false.
Several journalists reported from BJP ruled Karnataka and Gujarat that Migrants have been charged full fare even after BJP and Media’s claim of ‘Free Rail fare’.
Ahmedabad Mirror reported that migrants were paying the full amount in Gujarat.
Several other journalists also reported that Migrants are made to pay the full amount.
BJP ruled Karnataka also charged migrants for the train journey.
